Thornton is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,582 at the 2000 census. Thornton is home to the Thornton Quarry, one of the largest quarries in the world.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.4 square miles (6.2 km2), of which, 2.3 square miles (6.0 km2) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km2) of it (1.68%) is water.
As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 2,582 people, 1,008 households, and 710 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,106.2 people per square mile (427.9/km²). There were 1,035 housing units at an average density of 443.4 per square mile (171.5/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 96.7% White, 0.8% African American, 0.1% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.9% from other races, and 1.32% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.1% of the population.
There were 1,035 households out of which 27.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.6% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.5% were non-families. 25.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the village the population was spread out with 23.0% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.6% from 45 to 64, and 16.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 88.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.5 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $46,778, and the median income for a family was $55,104. Males had a median income of $45,577 versus $30,417 for females. The per capita income for the village was $22,899.
